Updated Mazda2 coming to NZ shores

Kiwis love cars of all shapes and sizes, and while there’s been a recent sales bump for larger vehicles like utes and SUVs, small and practical hatchbacks will always have a place here.

Sadly not all manufacturers are committed to the small car, with brands across the world chopping off the smaller sections of their range in favour of the big sellers. It’s fair enough, but what will the next generation learn to drive in? What will we use for zippy trips around town? Probably a Mazda2 by the looks of it.

Mazda2 survives for another generation

The Mazda2 (often known as a Demio for the older models) is a fixture on New Zealand roads. Thankfully, Mazda recently confirmed that not only will it remain on the roads, it’ll soon be updated with new looks and new tech.

It’s a face-lift rather than an all-new model, but considering the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20 and Volkswagen Polo have all been withdrawn from sale in New Zealand, an update is a much better fate. After all, it’s already one of the most affordable cars to have a 5-star ANCAP safety rating and received another refresh back in 2019.

What’s new for the 2023 Mazda2?

There’s been a few cosmetic updates to the new Mazda2 due to hit our shores later this year, with changes to the front and rear bumpers, tidying up the looks for the first time in four years. The front grille will now be accented with the same colour as the rest of the body which brings it in line with design language revisions across the Mazda range. These changes will be matched with two new paint colours, Aero Grey Metallic and Airstream Blue Metallic to make the new model really stand out.

Mazda has also made sure the multiple trim levels all stand out from each other too. The Evolve and GT are sweetened with red highlights throughout the interior, and the top-spec GT will naturally have leather seats to give the cabin a premium feel. The red and black dash is sure to stand out as well.

Why the current Mazda2 is such a favourite

We already mentioned the 5-star safety rating, but that’s not the only reason the Mazda2 is a great car. Since the new update is built on the existing model, it’s likely to still be an affordable way to get into a brand-new car.

Mazda’s Skyactiv 1.5 litre 4-cylinder is also the perfect little engine for this car, with a balance of power and fuel-efficiency that makes it satisfying to drive and kind on your wallet at the pump. The 5-year warranty is also great for peace of mind and is made even better by the fact it gives you unlimited kilometres. Combine that with 3 years of Genuine Mazda Scheduled Servicing and you’ve got a small, safe and efficient hatchback that will give you years of stress-free and enjoyable motoring.
