The three best EVs you can buy in 2022

Car manufacturers have heard the calls for electric vehicles, and have turned up the production accordingly. It’s good news for Kiwi drivers, as the new clean car rebate makes the notion of EV ownership even more appealing.

But what are the latest and greatest options to look out for? Read on to see the three EVs destined to make a splash in the coming year.

It doesn’t matter if you’re living in the country or the city, have a family or are a student – compact SUVs have something for everyone. But in a stacked sector, which models give you the best value? Here are the four we think deliver on all fronts.

Mazda MX-30

Mazda’s first electric vehicle has stormed onto New Zealand’s roads – and it knows how to make an entrance. The MX-30 is a sophisticated-looking compact SUV, offering both all-electric and hybrid models. Mazda hasn’t cut any corners on its sustainability ethos – the MX-30’s battery is a precise balance between a driver’s needs and emissions caused through battery production, keeping things as clean as possible. The battery’s maximum range is 220km, and will climb back to 80% within forty minutes on a DC fast-charging system.

But its eco features don’t stop there – the MX-30’s interior (elegant and ergonomic, in keeping with Mazda’s keen eye for design) is made with heritage cork, a sustainable material that absorbs CO2 as it regenerates; vegan leather that feels like the real thing; and recycled fabrics – such as reused plastic bottles, which make up the fibres in the door trim.

But how does it perform? In one word: sleekly. The front-wheel-driven electric motor gives the MX-30 responsive, zippy steering, which, in conjunction with its smooth power, makes it a joy to drive. This, coupled with the latest tech installations, including a Bose® sound system, puts this high on our Christmas list.

Ora Good Cat

If you haven’t heard of Ora, you will soon. This subsidiary brand of Great Wall Motors (an acronym for ‘open, reliable and alternative’) exclusively manufactures electric cars, and is set to hit our shores early next year.

Unlike most other EVs, Ora prides itself on its affordability – so you don’t have to choose between the planet and your bank account. It’s produced a few models since its conception in 2018, including the Ora iQ and the Ora Adora – but the vehicle we’ll most likely see is the Ora Good Cat (or Hao Mao). This little beauty is a retro-inspired compact EV hatchback, somewhat reminiscent of a VW Beetle or Mini Cooper.

Its sporty design, alongside excellent value, slick performance and eco-positive features, make it a strong force in the EV market – and we wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes a common sight on Kiwi roads over the course of the coming year.

Kia EV6

Another eagerly anticipated arrival to the EV market is the Kia EV6. This beast is unlike anything else Kia (or any other manufacturer) has produced before. It realises the true potential of electric performance, offering a range of sportscar-like models. The standard model will go from zero to 100km/h in just 6.2 seconds. And at the top of the range, the all-wheel-powered EV6 GT can accelerate from zero to 100 in 3.5 seconds.

But it’s not just about speed – the EV6 also gives drivers exceptional battery performance. Top-of-the-range models are capable of a whopping 510km, and will recharge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes at DC fast-charging systems (okay, so it’s still a little about speed).

On top of this, the Kia EV6 is spacious and beautifully designed – with looks that match its powerful performance. If you want to know more, check out the VR Test Drive for a snapshot of the Kia EV6 experience.
