Reliability is the single most important thing to look for in a used car. Ideally, you want to find a vehicle that runs exactly the same as new models – rarely ever breaking down – at a much more affordable price point. But how can you find one of these mythical cars? Here are three of the most reliable used cars in New Zealand to help you start your search.

1. Nissan Leaf

Electric vehicles are more reliable than those that run on petrol and diesel for one simple reason – they have fewer moving parts, which means a lower chance of part failure. In fact, the average internal combustion engine drivetrain has over 2,000 parts, while most EVs only have around 20.

That explains why the Nissan Leaf was rated NZ’s most reliable car in a 2019 Consumer NZ survey. More than 10,000 vehicles and 69 models were surveyed, and the Leaf came out on top with no serious faults reported in the last 12 months whatsoever.

Unsurprisingly, the car has become the most popular EV in the world, with 97 per cent of Leaf owners satisfied with their vehicle.

2. Suzuki Swift

Suzuki’s cars are affordable and practical, but they’re still heaps of fun to drive. They also rarely break down. The Consumer NZ survey we mentioned above rated the Japanese carmaker as the most reliable car brand you can buy. According to the survey, only 20 per cent of Suzuki owners report problems compared to the 30 per cent average across all car brands.

We reckon the Swift is the best of Suzuki’s range, and the experts agree. Last year, the zippy little hatchback was named as the most economical car on the market, with the Suzuki Vitara coming in a close second. What’s more, since the Swift is such a popular car, parts for it are usually cheap and easy to find – which makes repairs and maintenance a walk in the park.

3. Mazda CX-5

Mazda was recently named the second most reliable car brand in New Zealand by Consumer Reports. This is no surprise for anyone familiar with the brand – their cars are beautifully made and built to last.
If we had to pick our favourite Mazda, we’d single out the CX-5. This compact SUV comes in at an affordable price point, has countless high-tech features and is an absolute pleasure to drive.
