New Zealand’s Clean Car Discount encourages people to buy cars that are a bit more friendly on the wallet and the planet. But you don’t have to limit yourself to small cars when it comes to getting a saving, with a strong selection of SUVs all eligible for a saving. 

With SUVs continuing to be such a popular choice for Kiwi drivers, it’s nice to know there’s a reward for shopping smart. Here are some of our top picks for SUVs that are eligible for a Clean Car Discount in New Zealand. 

Kia Niro EV and PHEV

It’s not the biggest SUV out there, but it sure is one of the most efficient. Kia has really committed to electrifying its fleet and continues to develop cars that are both practical and cheap to run. The Kia Niro is a great example of this with both a fully electric or a plug-in hybrid option enabling all the benefits of an SUV with the petrol cost of a much smaller car.

Mazda MX-30 EV

Being a full electric vehicle, the Mazda MX-30 is eligible for a significant Clean Car Discount of $8,625 like its rival in the Kia Niro. This car is a huge step for Mazda as it’s the company’s first electric SUV and first foray into what is likely to be a competitive space. It’s built on the same platform as Mazda’s excellent CX-30 so many customers will be familiar with the crossover’s blend of good looks and practicality. 

While there is a hybrid option available here too, it’s just the electric version that’s eligible for a Clean Car Discount. 

Kia Sorento PHEV EX

The latest Kia Sorento comes in a massive range of trim options, but the one we’re talking about today is the PHEV EX. As a plug-in hybrid, the Sorento gains amazing fuel-efficiency and access to a Clean Car Discount of $5,750 when bought brand new. The combination of a 1.6 litre engine and electric power results in a reported fuel consumption of 1 litre per 100 kilometres which is astonishing.
