New Zealand’s most affordable EVs and Hybrids

We all know electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids have low running costs, but what about that initial purchase price? Thankfully, the last few years have resulted in a tonne of competition in this space, so when buying an EV or hybrid there’s a more affordable selection.

Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly SUV or zippy city runabout, there’s an affordable EV or hybrid for you from our range of trusted brands. Here are some of our favourites.

Ora Cat

This is a fresh favourite, with China’s all-electric Ora Cat arriving on New Zealand shores earlier this year for the first time. It’s the ultimate modern roundabout, with its compact size coming in three different trim levels: Standard, Long Range and GT.

The Clean Car Discount makes the Ora Cat even more appealing, as all trim levels are available for substantial discounts. After the rebate, the Standard Range Ora comes in at just over $41,000 plus on road costs.

Kia Niro HEV

If a hybrid is more your speed, Kia’s Niro range and received has you covered. The most affordable option is the HEV version, a conventional hybrid where the petrol engine is supported by electric power for greater fuel savings. In its most affordable trim and with the Clean Car Discount applied, the Kia Niro HEV costs just over $40,000.

However, for more on-road and Clean Car Discount savings, the Niro’s plug-in hybrid and full-EV counterparts are also excellent options. They cost a bit more upfront than the very affordable HEV, but promise more electric capability which can save in the long run.

Suzuki Swift Hybrid

How do you make one of New Zealand’s favourite hatchbacks even more appealing? Electrify it. The already affordable Suzuki Swift is a good deal even in its hybrid guise, with a cost of $24,829.48 after the Clean Car Discount.

Like any modern car, it’s got a 5-star ANCAP Safety Rating and helpful technology including reversing cameras, adaptive cruise control and support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Suzuki Swift already has a great reputation here, so buying an even more fuel efficient version is a sound investment and an affordable way to get into a hybrid.

Mazda M Hybrid MX-30

Mazda’s first ever hybrid takes a popular market segment – the crossover – and makes into an affordable hybrid that’s perfect for a growing family. The M Hybrid MX-30 pairs Mazda’s already fuel-efficient E-SKYACTIV-G 2-litre petrol engine with lithium batteries to reduce petrol consumption even further.

Priced at just over $47,000, the stylish MX-30 comes equipped with plenty of tech beyond its hybrid powertrain. One of the most impressive safety features is a 360-degree view monitor that not only shows you where you’re reversing, it provides an overhead shot of the car to make parking a breeze. Being a modern Mazda with a 5-star ANCAP Safety Racing, there’s a carful of amazing features like blind-spot monitoring, smart brake support, adaptive cruise control and much more.

New Zealanders have a range of affordable EVs and hybrids available. To see how you can benefit from the Clean Car Discount and get yourself into a new vehicle, catch up with the team at Niccars today.
