Four of the most exciting cars coming out in 2019
There are dozens of new cars being released on our shores to get excited about in 2019, from a reinvented offroad icon to an ultra-futuristic fully electric vehicle.
If you’re looking to buy a new car, look out for these four – our favourite new releases for the year ahead.
1. Suzuki Jimmy
Way back in 1970, Suzuki released a capable mini-off roader that was brimming with quirky personality – the Suzuki Jimny. There’s been three generations of the car since then and it’s sold close to 3 million units in 194 countries, becoming an icon in the process.
In 2019, Suzuki is releasing the fourth generation of the Jimny, complete with an updated look. The car is already proving wildly popular with pre-orders in Japan already outpacing supply. Official details are yet to be confirmed but Autocar NZ suspects the small SUV will feature a mini-but-mighty powerplant with 100 hp and 130 Nm of torque.
Drivers will also be able to handle rough terrain by switching from 2 to 4WD with the press of a button and making use of the impressive approach angle of 37 degrees and departure angle of 49 degrees.
2. Nissan Leaf
The original Nissan Leaf was a leap forward for electrical vehicles and a fantastic car, but (despite being the best selling EV of all time) it wasn’t perfect. The second generation model, coming to New Zealand in 2019, improves everything about the original.
The battery capacity has nearly doubled from 24 kW to 40 kW, which has increased the car’s range from 170 km to 270 km plus. It’s also got 150 hp under the hood, 40 more than the old model. The design has also been toned down and rethought, making the 2019 Leaf one of the most attractive EVs on the road.
3. Nissan Micra
The Nissan Micra has always been one of the most affordable cars that money can buy. The 2019 version, however, offers so much more than affordability. It’s been fully redesigned to sport a sleek, European look, which is unsurprising since its production has been moved to a factory just outside of Paris.
It’s also got an impressive array of technology in the cabin for a super-mini, including a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, optional Bose sound system and a surprising amount of storage space.
While the new direction may increase the price, you can be sure the 2019 Nissan Micra will still be one of the best value new cars on the road.
4. Takami Edition Mazda
Over the last five years, Mazda has reinvented itself to massive acclaim, winning several car of the year awards in the process. Instead of stripped back and simple, Mazda now means stylish, intelligent and upmarket.
Their next step forward is the luxury Takami range, a reworking of the current model CX-3, CX-5, CX-9 and Mazda 6. The Takami versions of these vehicles include luxuries like Nappa leather and aluminium trim, rosewood panels, ventilated seats and more. These additions transform the Mazda driving experience into something a little more comfortable and special.
