Not every SUV comes with a huge price tag! The Kia Seltos is proof of that, presenting a cheap compact SUV that still has space for five and all their gear. The fuel economy isn’t too shabby either, with an Atkinson cycle engine that’s all about saving you dollars on fuel, not cents. It’s unique among SUVs in that it’s not just a great pick for retirees looking for a smooth ride and plenty of space for the golf clubs; with a low price point, it could be a solid pick for young first car buyers as well – especially when you remember the Sport mode available at the flick of a switch.

5. Nissan X-Trail

Sometimes all you really need in a car is lots of space for the kids, pets and cargo. The Nissan X-Trail offers plenty of it and, depending on model, seats for up to 7 people, all wrapped up in a comfortable ride with options in 4WD should you be inclined to get the wheels muddy. For maximum value for money, look out for the ST 2WD 7-seater version.

6. Suzuki Swift

It’s a classic for a reason! This little runabout continues as one of the best value cars you can get in New Zealand, even in 2020. It’s still cheap and cheerful, with great fuel economy and a decent amount of space for both passengers and cargo. It’s a hatchback, so don’t expect to fit everything and the kitchen sink in there, but it’s a fantastic choice for a first car purchase – or if you just want something cheap, simple and cute.
