There are few things in life that are more difficult and more important than taking care of a sick child. Families often struggle – especially when they have to stay away from home for treatment, spending thousands of dollars on accomodation and food.

Ronald McDonald House Rotorua helps make it easier for families of terminally ill children to stay together in free accommodation near treatment centres. This local charity do all they can to make this tough time easier, including providing meals and support and a chance to make happy memories.

The important work of Ronald Mcdonald House Rotorua

As well as all their work supporting families in need, the Ronald McDonald House has launched a new initiative – retreats. These are two homes built especially for the purpose of bringing families from all over New Zealand into a caring community for a week’s free accomodation and fun.

Here in one of NZ’s tourism hotspots, sick children and their families have the chance to get away from the hospital and enjoy the lighter side of life. The generous volunteers at the retreats provide families with a warm welcome and a booklet of free or heavily discounted vouchers to the city’s best attractions.

Every week, the homes are cleaned and made up to welcome a new family and provide them with the same special memories and warm hospitality. These retreats alone help 104 families in need every year.

Raising money through the Ronald Mcdonald House Supper Club

To raise money to keep offering their incredible service, the Ronald McDonald House runs the Supper Club. This series of events sells tickets to a night of eating and drinking, and allows locals to gather in support of a truly worthy cause – all proceeds go towards the costs of running the Rotorua retreats.

Staffed entirely by hardworking volunteers, and frequently sold out, this is a night to remember in support of families who need it.

Shortly after opening in Rotorua, Barbara Cook, a member on the Rotorua Supper Club Fundraising Committee, met Ross Powell, our Sales Manager in Rotorua. Barbara asked Nicholson Auto to get involved with her work and things moved fast from there.

We decided to gift the Ronald McDonald Supper Club with a brand new Nissan Qashqai at a heavily discounted rate for them to raffle off at their event. Tickets are $100, buying you the chance to win the Nissan Qashqai SUV we provided, worth $36,270 plus on road costs.

The team at Nicholson Auto also sign wrote the Qashqai so that it serves as a moving billboard to promote the Supper Club events. We spoke to Barabara recently and we’re stoked to see that we’ve been able to make her work just a little bit easier:

“I can’t thank Alan and the Nicholson Nissan team enough for how supportive they have been through the whole process. Ross Powell has been outstanding in his support.”

“Ross has come along with me to many a night to sell the raffle tickets and – yep, the salesman in him comes out shining. I know more about the Qashqai now than I did before. The whole experience has been amazing and enjoyable.”
