New Zealand’s cheapest used SUVs
The only thing Kiwis love more than an SUV at the moment is a good deal. So we’re going to help you kill two birds with one stone and find an affordable family hauler that will do it all.
Buying a used SUV is a great way to save a bit of money, and gives you the option of buying from a wide selection of some of the country’s favourite cars. Here are some of our top picks.
Haval H6 Lux
They’re still relatively new to NZ, but Haval is making an impact as a provider of affordable SUVs for New Zealand families. That means they’re even more of a bargain when they show up on the used market.
A 2019 Haval H6 will give you everything you want from a modern SUV, at a lower cost than most of its rivals. Haval doesn’t skimp on features either, with a reversing camera, bluetooth connectivity and cruise control ensuring it feels updated, modern and safe.
Suzuki Jimny
Now this isn’t the biggest SUV on the market, but it might have the biggest personality. The 2-door Jimny comes in a range of funky colours and the boxy styling is a great retro throwback that makes it stand out.
It’s not the cheapest SUV on the market, but it’s the most affordable with off-road capabilities thanks to its four-wheel drive and high ground clearance. If you’re looking for an SUV with character and capability, the Jimny is a great choice.
Nissan X-Trail
Back to a more practical option, Nissan’s X-Trail has been notable on New Zealand roads for over a decade, with multiple generations refined over time while still managing to stay attainable.
New generations maintain an affordable price but still come stacked with features. X-Trails from 2020 have a leather interior for a touch of luxury, roof rails for extra practicality and a 5-star safety rating as you’d expect. The 2.5 litre petrol engine promises power as well, making it perfect for family weekend getaways.
Suzuki Vitara
Love a Suzuki but the Jimny isn’t quite enough car? Fair enough, as that’s where the Vitara comes in. Suzuki’s reputation has only grown in New Zealand, especially with the Swift becoming a hot choice for young drivers.
The Vitara takes everything we love about the smaller Suzukis and supersizes it, resulting in a full-size SUV that’s affordable and jam-packed with features. The 2022 Suzuki Vitara even has great fuel economy too thanks to its 1.6 litre petrol engine, so not only does it save you money up front, it’ll be relatively cheap to run as well.
Haval Jolion
The two Havals we’ve mentioned are the biggest in this list, proving this new manufacturer has nailed the affordable SUV formula and is giving Kiwis great bang for their buck. Parking sensors, blind spot detection and a reversing camera mean the Haval Jolion has all the features that are becoming essential in a modern car but doesn’t break the bank.
